did not mention fiscal cliff talks in his weekly address. the president's christmas break in hawaii may be quick. he is planning to return to washington right after christmas. brianna key lore keilar in honolulu. what happens now, is it at a standoff or are the lines of communication open during the holidays? >> well, right now, the lines of communication are open, certainly between president obama and the white house. and not necessarily speaker boehner, although there is some sort of lines of communication. but really, the ball is not in boehner's court anymore. it is president obama talking to the senate. he's talking to the senate democratic leader, harry reed, talking to move forward with some sort of smaller package to avert those tax hikes that are set to kick in. and obviously there's going to need to be some buy-in from the senate minority leader, republican mitch mcconnell. so that's where things stand. and president obama is actually hopeful that something could still be pulled off. listen. >> nobody can get 100% of what they want. and this is not simply a contest between parties in terms of who looks good and who doesn't. call m

, there will be life for the u.s. stock market after the fiscal cliff. it may not seem so today, as stock investors ran for the exits even faster than washington lawmakers left town for the holidays. but, somehow, someway, sometime there will be a deal between congress and white house. and, once that happens equity investors will need to refocus. >> once we get into the new year, i think we're going to get right back into earnings season again. and, once again earnings season is what happened last quarter and what do we think is going to happen in the quarters moving forward. >> reporter: as far as what happened in the quarter that ends for most companies on new year's eve, the answer isn't good. according to standard and poor's, wall street analysts predict big u.s. firms only saw a 3% increase in profits in the fourth quarter. on october 1, they were far more optimistic, forecasting a close to 10% gain. so what happened to all that earnings optimism earnings? it turns out it evaporated, as the u.s. economy started to show signs of weakness in the last few months. >> the trend of aggregate earnings has been flat or even a little bit down. so, if that d

uncertainty regarding the fiscal cliff. todd mccracken is president of the national small business association. he joins me from washington, d.c. todd, if no deal is reached by the end of the year, a lot of people predict spending will slow down. how will business owners react? >> well, i think they're going to react in a negative way because you mentioned the lack of confidence, a lack of certainty that's going to result, and that's absolutely the case. if you're a business owner and you're thinking about maybe expanding, if you're someone who's thinking about starting a business, which is what we need in this economy, this is not the time you're going to do that. you're going to put those plans off until you see how this all will get resolved. there's lots of practical questions for other business owners as well this would queue up. >> hasn't a lot of that slowing down already happened in the previous months since -- you know, i've been talking to folks since october, november. they've stopped hiring. they aren't putting in as many orders. isn't a lot of that already under way? do you expect it to get worse? >> it will get w

the stock market doesn't like washington's fiscal cliff fight. all three of the major indices closed lower today by nearly 1%. >>> our fourth story "outfront," a day of mourning. one week after 27 people were shot and killed in newtown, connecticut, communities across the nation paid tribute with a moment of silence. the tributes began at 9:30 this morning, the same time those first 911 calls came in to report the shooting last friday. firefighters stood solemnly in the rain as they paused to remember the 20 children and six adults who were gunned down at sandy hook elementary school. more than two dozen states had a moment of silence and lowered their flags to half staff. traders on the floor of the new york stock exchange stopped work for a minute before the opening bell. president obama paused to reflect in the oval office. avert the so-called fiscal cliff. house speaker john boehner is putting the ball in the court of the president and the democrats. and time is running out. will they come up with a solution? steve centanni is following this in washington. >> reporter: yeah, the fiscal cliff may be looming, but both sides have put negotiations on hold for now, to take a christmas holiday. no deal was reached this week to keep taxes from going up for everyone at the end of the year. house speaker john boehner, while saying he's still hopeful a sweeping deal can be reached, he's nonetheless, accusing the president of ignoring a huge problem here. >> this was the year of the size of our debt. all 16 trillion dollars surpassed the size of our entire economy. it's a grim many will have to bear if we don't come to grips with it. the president's solution of raising tax rates would still be red ink for as far as the eye can see he. >> reporter: president obama landed in hawaii this morning for a shorter than usual christmas break. and the white house yesterday, he said he thinks the comprehensive deal could still be reached, but at the same time, pushed for a scaled back plan to cut taxes for the middle class. >> even though democrats and republicans are a
